Jaws

I don't know why, but I love watching the movie Jaws whenever it's on TV. If I had it on DVD, I would never watch it, but when it's on television, I have to watch.

You're going to need a bigger boat

Jaws is on AMC tonight--it's their movie of the month. Put aside the low-budget shark and 1970s clothing, and the movie holds its own pretty well.

Except for the scene in the hospital following the encounter Chief Brody's (Roy Scheider) son had with the shark. Angry that the city council had refused to act, Brody strong-arms the mayor into paying the crusty fisherman (Robert Shaw) to kill the shark. The mayor signs the chit and then lights up a cigarette.

Every time I watch that scene I expect someone to tell the Mayor not to smoke in the hospital. How times have changed!

Prancer

(Thus says Suzanne)

I'm not a big movie person.  I go to the theater about three times a year (traditional birthday get-together with my two best girlfriends), and if I catch something on TV I confess it's probably a creature feature on Sci-Fi (what can I say, I love those rampaging reptiles).

Having said that...December wouldn't be complete without watching Prancer yet again.  Seems like everyone has a favorite holiday film, It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone (please only the first version, not the sequels), A Christmas Story, you get the idea.  For me it's Prancer.  I cry juicy tears every time, enough to give me a headache, but I love this movie.  Our heroine is a little girl with some grim circumstances, the death of her mother and subsequent financial difficulties leaving her father (Sam Elliot) considering sending her to live with her aunt.  When she finds an injured reindeer she is convinced it is Prancer and she is determined to help him get well and return him to Santa in time for Christmas.  Yep, I'm ready to watch it again.  I pulled it off the shelf and plan to grab some tissues and enjoy it this weekend.

Netflix

I'm not going to go to summer school this year so I've signed up for Netflix. I don't know how many movies I'll get to watch but it'll be cheaper than renting them and then returning them late.

The first film on my list (hopefully it's on the way as we speak) is Mostly Martha, recommended by both Carl and Suzanne. I suppose my shouting Now! Now! Now! won't speed it on its way.

Scary movies

I don't watch scary movies. I get too freaked out...tense, heart racing, not breathing for fear that whatever is stalking our hero might get me, too. I know that's the point, but I just can't take it.

For some reason, though, I love the Alien franchise. I am enthralled every time any of the films are aired. I know that the incubated creature will emerge violently from Cain's chest and scurry away, but I still hold my breath. I know that the science officer is really an android that will turn on the crew, but I'm shocked every time he (it?) tries to kill Ripley. I know that the creature has hidden itself in the console of Ripley's escape shuttle, but I still jump as its hand reaches for her.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that Michael Biehn is in the second movie.
